Gratitude: The Magnet of God’s Goodness
In life, we all go through difficult seasons. During such moments, it becomes easy to let discouragement, fear, anxiety, frustration, and comparison slip into our hearts. When these emotions take root, they cloud our spiritual sight. They lock us out from clearly seeing, hearing, and sensing God’s presence in our lives.
Psalm 100:4 encourages us to: “Enter His gates with thanksgiving…” This verse reminds us that gratitude is a key—one that opens the gates of heaven. Gratitude ushers us into God’s presence and clears our spiritual lenses. It enables us to recognize God’s hand even in the midst of crisis and challenges.Just as magnets attract iron, gratitude draws our hearts into an awareness of God’s goodness, faithfulness, protection, and unending love. It helps us hold firmly to God’s truth and promises, even when life feels uncertain. “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)
As we enter His courts with thanksgiving, gratitude also locks out certain things. It shuts the door to anxiety, comparison, fear, frustration, and bitterness.
Paul wrote, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6). So often, when challenges arise, our first response is to worry, compare, or complain. But Scripture invites us to approach God with prayer—and thanksgiving.
A thankful heart says:
-
“I don’t see a way through, but Lord, I thank You for the wonderful plans You have for me.”
-
“Lord, even in the midst of my trials, I give thanks for Your presence with me.”
-
“My life feels like it’s falling apart, but thank You, Sovereign Lord, for You are still on the throne and in control.”
When we present our requests to God with thanksgiving, gratitude guards our hearts and minds. It seals them from fear, murmuring, comparison, and anxiety—emotions that drain our peace and strength. Gratitude restores our spiritual equilibrium and opens the way for God’s peace to flow freely.
Gratitude realigns our hearts with the will of God so that His peace, which transcends all understanding, settles deep within us.
A thankful heart is gentle, teachable, expectant, and open. Such a heart allows God to move, speak, and strengthen us. This challenges us to examine what fills our hearts. When life “pushes” us, whatever fills our hearts will surely spill out.
My prayer is that when life pushes us, gentleness, gratitude, forgiveness, and worship be what flows out. It is God’s desire that our hearts be filled with gratitude in every situation.
A thankful heart sees God’s hand in every season—in waiting, in difficulty, in sorrow, and in pain. It does not wait for circumstances to change before giving thanks. Instead, it continually expresses gratitude for who God is. His goodness and faithfulness should always be the foundation of our gratitude.
So today, let your heart overflow with thanksgiving—because of who God is, what He has done, and what He is about to do. Gratitude positions us for more of His blessings and more of His presence.
Be blessed as you continue to give thanks to God.
