Trust Beyond the Silence
“But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.” – Psalm 13:5
Psalm
13 is one of the shortest psalms of David, and yet a powerful one. In this psalm,
three times he asks, ‘How long?’ indicating a phase of deep distress and
abandonment in his life. He begins this psalm by asking God, “How long, LORD?
Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?”
Just
as David did, when we are in distress, abandoned, lonely and forgotten. Or when we are in a season of waiting and things seem to move more slowly, we often find ourselves complaining to God with questions
like, ‘Why me, LORD? Why do I have to suffer this? How long will I endure this
pain and sickness? How long will you let them continue to torment me? When will you look to me with favour? Often, when
we don’t have what we need or are not where we should be, we begin to complain, find fault and lose faith in God’s plan. And yet we forget that God is ever faithful, even
in moments when it feels like He’s gone silent. When we don't realise this, the enemy will try to push us further away from God.
Our
struggles may not just be with external forces but also with struggles that are
from deep within. Struggling with thoughts of fear, doubt, despair, and worry. Even
David experienced these moments of sorrow and struggles when he wrote, ‘How
long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart?
Psalm 13:2
In
verses 3 and 4, David shifts his focus from complaining to praying. How many
times do we seek God in prayer when we are in deep distress and in sorrow? So
many times, people look to the world for attention, refuge and comfort in times
of trouble, but they don’t ever get to feel safe and satisfied by them. Like David,
we are encouraged to look to God in honesty for divine intervention whenever we
are experiencing difficult moments in life. As David writes, ‘Give light to
my eyes,’ he is turning to God to be revived, be restored and be strengthened
again.
In
verses 5 and 6, his tone suddenly changes from ‘How long, LORD?’ to ‘I
will sing to the LORD.’ In moments when we are low, we need to remember that
God is always faithful to His promises. He will never abandon us nor forsake
us, but He promises to be close to those who are broken-hearted. You are not
alone. God is working on your case. The enemy may deceive you into finding
faults in God’s plan by complaining about your situation, but today we are
encouraged to do what’s right. To turn our worry into worship, our complaints
into songs of praise.
Like
David, we can still praise God and worship Him even in the midst of our storm. Faith
is not denying the presence of pain in our lives; it is choosing to believe that
God will come through for us and see His goodness in the land of the living.
Reflection
Thought:
When God seem silent and distant, He is still faithful. Our emotions may change from time to time, but God’s love for us is never-ending. Psalm 13 serves as a reminder that even in moments of honest lament, it can still lead us to worship God.
Prayer:
Heavenly
Father, we thank you for your unending love for each one of us. LORD, we choose
to believe in you and trust in your faithfulness beyond the silence. And even when our
circumstances look different, we still choose to honour you and offer our praise
to you, for you are good. Heavenly Father, thank you for your strength, love
and grace in Jesus’ name, amen.
