Unshaken: Trusting God When Life Trembles
Truly my soul finds rest
in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly, he is my rock and my salvation; he
is my fortress, I shall never be shaken.” – Psalm 62:1-2
David begins Psalm 62 by declaring that only in God will his soul find rest and only God is his defence, strength and salvation. Twice, he mentions only, signifying the exclusive help of God. In life, we may experience things that may shake our world, just as David did. You may feel surrounded by troubles, enemies coming after you, and your life may feel shaken to the core.
However, we can learn
from Psalm 62:5 as David declared, ‘Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope
comes from him.’ Even though our lives may come under attack, there’s hope
in God. He’s the only one who can give rest to our souls and set us upon a rock
that cannot be shaken. God is our fortress, a place we can run into and be safe.
Not only does David know
and believe that God is his salvation, but he also declares it. In verse 6, it reads,
“Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I shall not be
shaken.” Often, when we face trials in life, we talk more about the problem
and how big they are instead of focusing on God. We must live by Psalm 62:5
every single day.
Whenever we are faced
with challenges of various kinds, Psalm 62:5 should be the very first thing that
comes out of our mouths. You may start by declaring: “I may be facing problems right now, but I know God is my rock, and my salvation, I shall
not be shaken." There’s power in declaring the word of God in our lives and in
every situation we encounter.
Our salvation and hope are
in the Lord and not in people or material possessions. David goes ahead and encourages
us to trust God at all times, and when we are faced with troubles and disappointments
in life, we can come to Him and pour out our hearts to God. This means we can
approach God in honesty and in truth. Whatever it is that troubles your heart,
you can come before Him in truth and cast your cares unto Him, for He is your
refuge and you can find peace in His presence.
David also warns that we shouldn’t
put our trust in riches, extortion or in stolen goods, for this will surely
fail. In verse 10, “Do not trust in extortion or put vain hope in stolen goods;
though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them.” Certainly, David
had resources, wealth and armies at his disposal, and he could have easily set
his trust in them, but he didn’t. He understood that trusting in riches is foolishness.
Putting our trust in God at all times is wisdom.
Trouble may come to us, but how we choose to respond
to it matters the most. Our hope and trust should be set on God. He never
fails those who choose to put their trust in Him. He gives us strength, stability
and rest in the midst of storms of life. Wind may blow, rain may fall, and
trouble may shake your world, but we will remain unshaken because we chose to
put our trust in God. As David write in verse 12, “Power belongs to you,
God, and with you, Lord, is unfailing love.”
Heavenly Father, we thank you your unfailing love in
our lives. Help us put our trust in you. With you on our side, we are
confident that even though trouble surrounds us, we shall not be shaken. Help us
live each day by Psalm 62:6, amen.
