LIFT UP YOUR EYES TO HEAVEN

I lift up my eyes to the mountains-
Where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
The Maker of heaven and earth – Psalm 121:1-2

When you are hard pressed between a rock and a hard place, where do you look for help? When your spirit is crushed and you feel you can’t go on anymore, where do you draw your strength? We live in a world that is very unpredictable, there’s so much negativity that’s going on, and life continues to get harder and harder. For some of you, it may feel like you are falling and you don’t know where you are going to land. You have searched for help all around you but you haven’t found the kind of help that sets your soul at rest. However, there’s still one more place you’ve not looked and that’s up to Heavens.

Jesus Christ continues to encourage us to “first seek his kingdom and his righteousness”. He basically means that we ought to live on the vertical plane. When our life is set on the vertical plane it means that we are in oneness with God, and we are able to commune with God and constantly desire the things of the Spirit. Once we have set our life on a vertical plane then God goes ahead and sets our life on a balance and “all these things will be given to you as well.” –Mathew 6:33.

The problem is we don’t always set our life on the vertical plane, but rather on the horizontal plane. On the horizontal plane we make earthly matters a priority. It then becomes our point of focus. We concern ourselves with things like: “What are we going to eat?” or “Where shall the money come from” or “What are we going to do?” or “What will happen next?” Living on the horizontal plane, we begin to seek ways that we can please the Flesh. And when it comes to seeking help, we only seek it horizontally. And what normally happens with horizontal help often fails.

God knows what you are going through, the things that you need, He knows how to get you through and He’s got all the help that you need. But first, you need to seek Him on the vertical plane. You need to look up. When you meet God on the vertical plane, He will meet your every need; He will fight for you, and help you. It is important that we set our relationship with God straight so that our relationship with other people can be set on a balance. If our relationship with God is not set straight, how else then can we say that our life is on a balance?

Jesus has very well demonstrated the importance of looking up to heaven. Before he fed the five thousand people he took the five loaves of bread and two fish and looked up to heaven. “Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven.” Just when Jesus was about raise Lazarus from the dead we read, “Then Jesus looked up” – John 11:41. And when he prayed, we read “he looked towards heaven”. – John17:1. Jesus looking up to heaven acknowledges that his source of strength, power and help comes from the Almighty God who sits on the throne.

Living on the horizontal plane is stressful, meaningless and without a lasting satisfaction. While living on the vertical plane we are able to find peace, satisfaction, joy and we come to a point we can say “My soul is rest” despite the chaotic circumstances that may surrounds us. The door is still open. And Jesus continues to invite us to Him, “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Mathew 11:28. It is my prayers that we may answer His call and draw near to him, not only to know Him but also the Father who is in Heaven.

I lift up my eyes to you, to you who sit enthroned in heaven. – Psalm 123:1
