FIX YOUR EYES ON GOD

Our God, will you not judge them? For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you. – 2 Chronicles 20:12

In 2 Chronicles chapter 20, King Jehoshaphat received news that vast armies of the Moabites, Ammonites and Meunites had united to wage war against him. The news greatly troubled Jehoshaphat. He went before the Lord and enquired of God’s guidance. At the end of his prayers he says: “Our God, will you not judge them? For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”

Just like king Jehoshaphat, are you in a situation where it feels like there are so many great things that are coming against you and you just don’t know what to do? You may have health issues to deal with, problem with your kids, problems in your finances, problems at work, trouble in your relationships or you got people desiring to put you down but you just don’t know what to do about it.

When we find ourselves in such moments of not knowing what to do, very often we open the door for fear, despair, and worry to come in and cause terror into our lives. In our moments of not knowing what to do always presents an opportunity for us to allow God into the situation to show us what to do when we set our eyes on Him. When King Jehoshaphat received news about the enemies of Judah planning to attack him, he could have called his council members, or his army generals to help him plan a counter attack in order to defend the city. And because of how vast his enemies were, he could have sought help from his allies to help him fight the Moabites, the Ammonites and the Meunites armies; after all he was the King.

However, that wasn’t so. He did the right thing to seek the council of the Lord God before anything or anyone else. He understood that with God all things are possible, and His help is ever present even in times of trouble. We read, “Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to enquire of the Lord.” – 2 Chronicles 20:3. David writes in Psalm 46: “God is our refuge and strength, and ever-present help in trouble.”

When you have a bigger problem to deal with, a problem that seem difficult for you to overcome; instead of allowing fear to overcome you, you can always look up. Look up to the Lord, and set your eyes on Him because that’s where your strength and help comes from. “I lift up my eyes to the mountains- where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” – Psalm 121:1-2. Paul encourages us that in whatever situation we may be in, we can always present our petition before God rather than being worrisome about it. Philippians 4:6: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God.”

The problem is that we compare our own strength, and resources with what is positioned against us causing us to fear and despair. But when we bring God into the picture, we begin to see that God is Greater, more Capable and Mightier than all of the troubles we face. When we bring God into our ‘Don’t know’ moments, that’s when we begin to see new chapters in our lives rather than the end.

It is important to notice that King Jehoshaphat chose to say, “But our eyes are on you.” He had his mind already made up that he wasn’t going to focus on how great his enemies were or how powerless and weak he felt but he chose to focus his eyes on God: The God who fight our battles; The Creator of heaven and earth; and the God who did mighty wonder to set the children of Israelites out of Egypt.

The more we fix our eyes on God, the more we see a way and lesser about the dead end. Like Jehoshaphat we can speak to our problems and say: “Our enemies may be great, but we serve a greater God. I may be experiencing health issues but I know God Jehovah Rapha is my healer. I may be in lack right now, but my God is Jehovah Jireh, My Provider.”

I pray that the Grace of God be plenty upon us so that we may always seek God first in every circumstance through prayers. I pray that the Grace of God continues to help us in fixing our eyes on God despite the present troubles that we may be going through.
