A CRY FOR MERCY
Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord
Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy. – Psalms 130:1-2
In Luke’s gospel, we read about a blind beggar who cried out for mercy to Jesus. His cry for mercy was heard by Jesus and he received the blessing of a miracle that he was seeking.
In Luke 18:35, there’s a blind beggar who sat by the roadside begging for alms from passersby. To him that day was as ordinary as any other day. As Jesus was approaching Jericho, the blind beggar heard a crowd passing by, when he asked what was going on he was told: “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by”- Luke 18:37
When the blind beggar heard that Jesus was passing by, something must have sparked inside of him. It is like the thought of Jesus passing by re-ignited a fire inside of him that caused him to call out to Him saying: “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” – Luke 18:38. Knowing that Jesus was in the area, it re-awakened his desires to see. The beggar had been blind all his life. He definitely had never seen Jesus and had never seen Jesus perform miracles but he chose to believe in Jesus Christ, as he calls him Son of David.
Even though the blind beggar could not see, or tell who Jesus was but decided to believe in Jesus. He knew that Jesus, Son of David, was the light to his world thus he cried, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me. As dark as his world was, he saw the Light of the world who was Jesus. Does your life feel like it’s in the dark? Do you feel like you have lost the sense of direction? Well, the good news is Jesus is in the neighborhood and He’s passing by, will you cry out to Him for mercy and run towards the light?
However, the enemy will always try to stand in the way trying to prevent you from receiving your blessings, the miracle and stop you from going towards the light. The enemy’s desires are to keep you in darkness, where there’s no progress, the enemy just want to keep you in a place of stagnation. As with the blind beggar, there were those who rebuked him and told him to stay quiet. But he cried to Jesus for mercy even louder than before.
Very often the enemy puts negative thoughts into your mind in order to put you down, thoughts like: ‘Who do you think you are that you can rise higher? What makes you think that you are special nothing good has ever come from your family? Who told you that you are worthy of blessing? Nobody wants you. God has forgotten about you, He doesn’t love you.’
Just like the blind beggar who shouted even louder when the naysayer tried to keep him quiet, we all need to make our faith shout louder and louder when the enemies tries to put us down, condemn us or discourage us. When the enemy comes against you with thoughts of weakness, you say, ‘I am a mighty warrior and the Lord God is with me. When the naysayers tell you that you can’t do it, you say ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’ When the naysayers tell you that what you are trying to do is impossible, you say, ‘The Lord God is with me, nothing is impossible to Him.’
David writes, "Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy." – Psalms 130:1-2. When you come to God in prayers crying for mercy it immediately gets God’s attention. Just like what the blind beggar did, he cried for mercy and it immediately caught Jesus’ attention which made Him to stop.
We can learn from what David writes in Psalm 130:1, "Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord." No matter the mistakes we’ve done, the failures, our shortcomings, or how deep you may have fallen into sin we can still come before the Almighty God in humility crying for His mercy. God is willing to help and forgive those come to Him.
The world we live in is in the business of condemning, pushing people into the sidelines but Jesus is in the business of helping those who are in trouble, to spare, to protect, to heal and to forgive those who come or call out to him. Jesus quotes from the book of Hosea 6:6, “I desire mercy not sacrifice”
When you know that God has shown you mercy, that He healed you, protected you, provided for you, forgave you, and shown you favor you would definitely acknowledge Him and say: ‘Where would I be if it wasn’t for the Mercies of the Almighty God?’
It is my prayers that we may come to the Lord God in prayers, seeking Him in humility and His mercy and with a heart of repentance.
