The Lord is my Shepherd
“The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not lack.” – Psalm 23:1
This is one of my favorite’s psalms by David. Before he became the king of Israel, David was a shepherd boy guarding his father’s sheep. And the work of a shepherd is to guide his sheep towards the right path away from danger. When sheep are not properly guided, they tend to walk astray. So, it is upon the shepherd to ensure they don’t walk astray. And we also know that sheep are not usually that smart. Really, the work of a shepherd is to feed, guide and offer protection to his flocks.
When David wrote, ‘The Lord is my shepherd’, he wrote it from a personal relationship with God. As with David, the Lord has always been our Shepherd. God being the Good Shepherd, He has ensured His (people) flocks are fed with His provision. Each day He renews His Grace upon us. For it is difficult to do anything without His grace. He also guides us to the right path. And when we get lost in our ways, He guides us back to His fold. God’s counsel always leads to the right direction. By acknowledging God as the Shepherd, it means submitting to His authority and yielding to His will.
God being the good Shepherd, He protects us from harm and danger. A shepherd knows that danger is always lurking somewhere in the field. And His intentions are to protect us from such dangers. God’s provision to us each day is always enough. As David writes, ‘I shall not lack’. This brings out an attitude of gratitude and contentment. Whatever is outside the Shepherd’s provision, I do not need. And whatever I need, the Shepherd provides. God is sufficient for all of our needs.
How wonderful it is to start your day each morning with such kind of attitude in your heart knowing that, ‘the Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not lack’. The confidence that it brings in you and in everything that you do, as you are aware that God is guiding you, ordering your steps, and protecting you. All of our needs He knows them and He has made our daily provision ready even before we started the day.
A time will come when the Good Shepherd has to shear His sheep. During this uncomfortable period, we must learn to stay calm in His hands and to trust Him as He works something good in us. This is usually a season of growth.
A good shepherd knows His sheep, and His sheep knows His voice. It is my prayer that when we hear the voice of our Lord (the Good Shepherd), we may be quick to obey his commands with love. Having confidence, that we are under His authority, guidance, protection and provision. Be Blessed.
“If the Lord is your Shepherd, He is sufficient for all your needs.”- Tony Evans
