Obedience
“If you [really] love Me, you will keep (obey) My commands.” – [John 14:15].
From the time we were young, our parents taught us how to obey them and why we should obey them. We also learnt that by obeying our parents and elders; was a show of respect even when sometimes we didn’t agree with their opinions. This is because, they had a better experience than ours, they knew more than we did and they expected us to obey them because they loved us. They simply didn’t want us to stumble in our ways.
In similar manner, our heavenly Father also expects us to obey Him. God speaks to each one of us in various ways. One of the ways He speaks to us is through His word, the Bible. Other times it is through a soft voice in our hearts. And when God speaks to us in whatever form He chooses, He expects us to obey Him. Obedience is really important to God. He said, “If you [really] love Me, you will keep (obey) My commands.” – [John 14:15]. Obedience comes from a place of love. We should obey God’s commands because we love Him.
God knows our lives much better than we do ourselves. He knows the end from the beginning, He knows the right path for us that will bring joy to us. When God speaks to us, He does it from a place of love. He wants us to enjoy the very best things in life when we obey His command. His soft whispers guide us to the right path, away from sin and danger. When God speaks to us, He is really guiding us to do the right thing. When we obey His word, we are drawn us closer to God and He reveals Himself more to us; thereby developing a closer relationship with God. When we are closer to God, we are able to obey and trust Him even more.
What really is obedience to God? Simply, it means hearing the word of God, and acting on it. A lot of times we have heard God’s voice in our hearts, and we know what we were supposed to do but we don’t do it. It could be about the little things that God is talking to us about but we simply ignore His voice, we doubt if it is really God talking to us and a lot of times, we debate about it whether or not we should do it. Obedience is marching right on what God has commanded you to do, whether you feel like it or not.
Total obedience is better than partial obedience. You may have heard God’s voice in your heart but you do it half-way. Doing it half-way is as good as disobedience. When you know that God is really speaking to you in your heart, simply put your faith into action and do it. By allowing doubt in, it will stop you from doing God’s will. Let your actions be driven by faith. Faith never knows where it is being led, but it loves and knows the One who is leading. God leads and we follow.
