Obedience unlocks God's Blessings
“Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.” – Lk 11:28
Our obedience to God is very important. When we obey God’s word, we are able to receive His blessings. Obedience unlocks God’s blessings in our lives. God has the very best things in life for us to enjoy when we obey Him. Remember, obedience comes from the place of love. When we love God, we are then able to obey Him easily. And He opens the doors of blessings to our lives as a reward for the obedience.
Naaman was an army commander for the king of Syria. He was very successful, well accomplished and very respectable man but he was a leper. When he heard that there was a prophet in Israel who could cure him of his leprosy, he journeyed to Israel to find this prophet. When he arrived, prophet Elisha sent a messenger and commanded Naaman to go dip himself seven times in river Jordan. When Naaman heard this, he became furious and angry. He questioned why the prophet didn’t come before him and call out the name of the Lord so that he could be healed. Not only that, Jordan river was unclean. There were other rivers in Israel that were clean, Elisha could have told him to go and wash in these rivers.
As he was about to leave because of his disappointment, his servant reasoned with him to only obey the small thing that he was commanded to do. For if he were asked to do a greater thing, he would have done it. He agreed and went down to the river and dipped himself seven times. After washing himself in the river, his skin was restored. He got healed.
Like Naaman, God usually commands us to do the simple things in our daily lives but often we find ourselves questioning Him. Like, “why me?”, “Am too busy, choose someone else”, “what would people say?”, or “am not qualified or talented”. And by questioning we end up disobeying God. Sometimes God asks us to do things that don’t really makes sense. His intentions are not to hurt us but to help us, restore us, bless us, keep us away from harm and sin, and to draw us closer to Him. If Naaman hadn’t obeyed, he wouldn’t have received the healing. By obedience he received a miracle.
It is through obedience that we are able to discover the good things that God has in-store for us. We may come to God through prayer asking Him to do certain things they way we want it done but He does it in a different way. It is important to surrender our ways to God and let Him do things His way. Otherwise, we may end up holding resentment and anger towards God because He asked us to do something or He did something in a manner we didn’t like. God’s way is always better than our ways. Questioning God’s way is a show of disrespect. In other words, we are trying to show God we are smarter than Him. Surrender you will unto God and obey.
The Greatest blessings come as a result of our willingness to do something which seem insignificant. Whatever thing that God asks you to do, usually the simple things, simply do it out of love. Without grumbling and complaining in your heart. When you obey God whole-heartedly, miracles and blessings overflows upon you. The blessing that you seek, is dependent on your willingness to obey. The challenge for you and I is to know and obey God’s command.
